MSP arson update: Florida man injured in police shootout

SAULT STE. MARIE — A Florida man was injured in a shootout with Michigan State Police troopers on Thursday afternoon, the Michigan State Police Sault Ste. Marie Post said in a news release.

At about 3:15 a.m. Wednesday, a suspect driving a silver-colored Honda CRV entered the driveway of the MSP Sault Ste. Marie Post. The male suspect parked his vehicle and exited wearing camouflage. He doused several patrol vehicles with gasoline and set them on fire.

After setting them on fire, he produced a rifle from the vehicle and proceeded to fire multiple rounds into and around the patrol vehicles. After an extensive investigation and multiple tips, the suspect’s location was found along Riverside Road in Chippewa County.

At about 1:45 p.m. Thursday, a search warrant was executed by the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team. During the execution of the search warrant, the suspect, a 39-year-old man from Florida, fired gunshots toward troopers at which time troopers returned fire.

The suspect was injured and was taken by ambulance to My Michigan Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries. He remained in custody as of Thursday afternoon. No officers were injured.

The investigation is active and maximum charges are being sought.
