Ishpeming Noon Kiwanis Club dedicates new playground

ISHPEMING -- The Ishpeming Noon Kiwanis Club dedicated the Ray Leverton Memorial Playground at the Lake Bancroft Pavillion on Saturday.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony honored the late Ray Leverton of Ishpeming. Leverton was a Korean War veteran and devoted countless hours in serving his community and its children, according to a press release from the Ishpeming Noon Kiwanis Club.
"He was a volunteer for the Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and also raised nearly $600,000 for the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library," the Ishpeming Noon Kiwanis Club said. "The Ishpeming Noon Kiwanis Club is proud to continue in Ray's footsteps and serve the youth of Ishpeming."
Residents and visitors are able to enjoy the playground from sunrise to sunset located at Spruce and Euclid streets in front of the Mining Heritage Pavilion.
"(The playground) is a great addition to the city. The Lake Bancroft Park was already a very nice park and was an asset for the community," Ishpeming Noon Kiwanis Club President Anthony Bertucci said in a previous Mining Journal article. "But adding a play structure to that area ups that usability that much more. Now there's not only the park and the pavilion but now there's also a place for children to play."
The playground's total cost was $155,000, with $135,000 toward playground structure. Funds are still needed to put in park enhancements such as sidewalks, picnic tables and park benches. Anyone who would like to make a donation can do so by directly sending the club a check at P.O. Box 604 in Ishpeming.
