MARQUETTE — When calling the Marquette Police Department, one may catch one of its new faces.

Officers Robert Perowitz and Devin Tasson were sponsored by the MPD to go to Northern Michigan University’s Regional Police Academy.

A “grueling” 16-week program, according to Lt. James Finkbeiner, the academy tested their knowledge of the law as well as their physical fitness to serve and protect.

Aside from being sponsored by a department, those interested in serving as law enforcement officers could also obtain a two- or four-year degree from NMU to be eligible to apply for the academy.

After graduating last Friday, Perowitz and Tasson took their oath of office and received their badges from police Chief Ryan Grim and city of Marquette Clerk Rachel Quayle.

“They’ll be on a field training program for the next four months,” Finkbeiner said, “working with another officer in our department to learn what it means to be a Marquette city police officer.”

The ceremony, attended by friends, family and their new associates, was made to be a special moment for Perowitz and Tesson.

“We’ve all been through an academy to become a police officer so we know what it takes,” Finkbeiner stated. “These two officers excelled, they did very well in the academy so knowing what it takes to get through that … we’re very proud to have them come on board as police officers.”
