Pedestrian killed in Mackinac County crash

GOULD CITY — A Crystal Falls man was killed in a Monday pedestrian hit-and-run crash on U.S. 2 near Milakokia Lake Road in Newton Township.

The Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that at approximately 9:05 p.m. Monday, sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash, which involved a westbound pickup truck that overtook another westbound vehicle at a high rate of speed and struck a pedestrian who was checking their vehicle legally parked on the highway’s shoulder.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver did not stop and continued west on U.S. 2 for several miles, at which he stopped on the side of the road. Off-duty police officers who witnessed the crash followed and also stopped to check on the suspect, at which point he was detained until local law enforcement arrived.

The suspect, identified as Eric Thomas Gilmour of downstate Grand Blanc, was arrested and taken to Mackinac Straits Hospital for treatment, and later was lodged in the Mackinac County Jail. He was arraigned in the 92nd District Court and is being held on a $500,000 bond.

The victim was identified as Douglas Raymond Jr., 40, of Crystal Falls.

The MCSO said a preliminary investigation indicated that alcohol and speed were factors in the incident. The crash still is under investigation by the MCSO and Michigan State Police accident investigators.

Mackinac County sheriff’s deputies were assisted on the scene by Newton Township Fire, Garfield Township Fire, Portage Township EMS, the Michigan Department of Transportation, and MSP troopers from the St. Ignace and Sault Ste. Marie posts as well as the MSP Manistique Outpost.
