Juvenile injured after falling from rock

ISHPEMING — A juvenile was injured after falling while rock climbing near the Range Area Mountain Bike Association bike trails near Malton Road in Ishpeming.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that at about 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, the MCSO Search and Rescue Team as well as UP Health System EMS responded to a juvenile who had fallen approximately 40 feet while rock climbing. The incident occurred on a high rock face between Malton Road and New York Street in the city of Ishpeming.

Two juveniles were riding their bicycles along a section of RAMBA’s Epic Bike Trail west of Malton Road when they decided to scale the rock face. The victim climbed to a rock outcropping before losing his grip and falling. The victim’s friend, who had a cell phone with him, called 911 to report the incident.

The victim received minor injuries during the fall, the MCSO said. The MCSO Search and Rescue Team carried the subject about 20 yards to an all-terrain vehicle rescue sled, and then drove him to a waiting ambulance.

The juvenile was transported by UPHS EMS to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of his injuries.
