Ishpeming woman ordered to undergo competency exam

MUNISING -- A competency exam has been ordered for Julie Boxley, 51, of Ishpeming, who is charged with third-degree arson and assault with intent to do great bodily harm stemming from an incident that took place in October 2021.

Boxley was scheduled for a probable cause conference on Friday, but that was adjourned so she could undergo the exam.

The Michigan State Police Negaunee Post previously said in a news release that during the course of an unrelated investigation, detectives from the Negaunee Post learned of an incident that occurred in Alger County involving an assault and arson that was unreported.

After further investigation, detectives learned a 63-year-old male victim, who at the time was residing at a residence in Christmas, was allegedly assaulted by his wife.

The investigation revealed the suspect poured lighter fluid on the victim and started him on fire.

The fire was quickly extinguished with no injury to the victim.

Boxley was arraigned in the 93rd District Court in Alger County on June 22. She remains in the Alger County Jail.
