Ishpeming Fire Dept. celebrates city’s 150th anniversary

ISHPEMING -- Fire truck lovers and history buffs were able to enjoy 150 years of history on Wednesday.
The Ishpeming Fire Department celebrated the city's 150th anniversary with a free open house for residents and visitors to view antique fire trucks and historic photos and meet current firefighters.
Despite the cloudy weather, Chief Engineer Brett Anttila said the turnout had been great. He said throughout the day there had been at least 200 visitors.
"Turnout has been a lot better than I thought with the possibility of rain and (the event being held) during working hours, but we've had (a lot of) people come through," Anttila said. "(The open house) is a lot more successful than I thought."
Current and older models of fire trucks were on display along with an 1861 hand pumper, 1873 horse hose cart and a 1923 Seagrave fire engine pumper.
"It's been great getting all the kids here and showing them around," Anttila said. "They all have fun. Everybody loves fire equipment."
Anttila's son, Xander LaPointe, was one of the many visitors who enjoyed the open house. He said when he's older, he would like to become a firefighter.
"My favorite part (of the open house) is playing on the fire trucks," LaPointe said.
When LaPointe wasn't in one of the fire trucks, he could be found following Anttila around as he shared some of the historic items such as photos, old fire alarm boxes and awards the fire department has won over the years.
Fire Chief Jason Annala also said the best part about the day was having visitors see the historical items on display.
"It's nice seeing a lot of people come down and check stuff out," Annala said.
