ISHPEMING -- The city of Ishpeming is looking for volunteers to join its beautification committee to adopt new city garden areas or assist with established locations.
"It is exciting to share the joy of gardening and seeing our city bloom," it said on Ishpeming's website. "Year after year, our volunteers' contributions are witnessed and appreciated by thousands of residents and visitors."
The Ishpeming Downtown Development Authority will purchase flowers and any needed supplies to maintain the areas year-round.
Master gardener Linda Andriacchi said beautification is a good way to welcome visitors to the city.
"The residents are anxiously awaiting the hanging baskets, asking when they will be hung up," Andriacchi said. "When you travel through the city and see clean spaces and beautiful gardens, it makes you want to stay. You want to purchase a home or open a business and live in a beautiful place."
She said being a volunteer is rewarding and opens the doors to work with people and become friends with people through volunteer work.
"(Volunteering) makes you happy when you see people enjoying something you work on or create," Andriacchi said. "While you work on a garden bed, people drive by and thank you for the work you do to make the city beautiful."
Andriacchi said there are also health benefits from working outside.
"Whatever you are doing, cleaning up, weeding, raking leaves, planting, just being outside doing something makes you feel better and want to do more," Andriacchi said.
Her favorite part about the beautification work in Ishpeming is the joy it brings to residents.
"We are all working together to create a beautiful space for all of us to enjoy," Andriacchi said.
