ISHPEMING -- A local nonprofit organization providing free outdoor adventures for those living with physical disabilities and chronic illness reported online fraud Friday.
Courage Incorporated Executive Director Erik Conradson posted on Facebook that the special "Yooper Box" offer from the Meat Freaks Jerky Club company scammed customers out of money.
"It has become clear to us that the company and its owner have no intention of following through with his commitment to ship you the merchandise that you ordered, offer you any refund, nor provide any of the proceeds to Courage Incorporated as originally promoted," Conradson said on Facebook.
He said the owner of Meat Freaks Jerky Club said he was originally from the Upper Peninsula and moved away but wanted to give back to the community.
"He gave us his vision and we were very excited to move forward with his idea to sell a special jerky box honoring our Yooper heritage," Conradson said. "He took advantage of our excitement and he took advantage of all of you."
Courage Incorporated has been in contact with the Marquette County Sheriff's Department regarding this case. Residents of Marquette County who ordered the "Yooper Box" and have not received product or a refund are asked to contact the MCSD and speak with Deputy Mike Anderson by calling 906-225-8435.
Those outside Marquette County affected are asked to file a report with their local law enforcement agency and refer them to the MCSD or contact Anderson with their local jurisdiction report number.
"It is our hope that all of you who have not received product or a refund reach out to law enforcement so that we can hold accountable the party responsible," Conradson said. "We need everyone affected to file a report so we can show the totality of the issue."
Despite the ongoing case, the Courage Incorporated 2023 adventure season has begun.
"Our excursion schedule is already full and we are on track to help a good number of people experience the beauty and excitement of the beautiful Upper Peninsula wilderness," Conradson said. "It is my hope that you all still see the value of our programs and continue to offer the generous support to our organization as you have over the last several years. Please accept my most sincere apology regarding this terrible issue."
