MARQUETTE -- Area law enforcement banded together Friday in collaboration with Marquette's Dunkin' Donuts location to raise money for the Special Olympics with a "Cop on a Rooftop" event.
Dunkin' Donuts is a sponsor of the Special Olympics, an international sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Locations throughout Michigan and the United States are hosting fundraisers to support their local teams.
"It allows people who may not have advantages like others to play multiple different sports and law enforcement wants to help out with that, so that's why we're here," said Northern Michigan University Police Officer Adam Maynard.
Northern Michigan University Police along with Michigan State Police and officers from the Michigan Department of Corrections were stationed outside the coffee shop from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. visiting with customers and collecting monetary donations.
"It's a good cause. It's been a really good turnout today. A lot of donations and it's just fun to be out here with the athletes," Maynard said.
Dunkin' Donuts employees also donated all the tips they made to support the Special Olympics athletes.
Those who donated received a coupon for a free coffee.
The athletes, many of whom are local residents, will head to Mount Pleasant near the end of this month to compete in the Special Olympics Michigan Summer Games.
In total, they raised $509.20.
