NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee Planning Commission at its latest meeting approved Ore to Shore’s special land-use permit to build a temporary campground for the event.
Ore to Shore is Michigan’s largest mass start, point-to-point mountain bike event. This year, the event will be held on Aug. 12 with the campground operating Aug. 11-13.
The campground will be located at Jackson Mine Park in Negaunee and have 30 campsites. Ore to Shore campground manager Nic Tuma said these temporary campsites will allow increased foot traffic for businesses in downtown Negaunee.
“Those staying in the campground will wake up just blocks from the start line on race morning,” Tuma said in an email. “They also get the benefit of using the Jackson Mine Park Pavilion and can wind down after their race by the campfire and have a few beverages.”
Tuma said he is looking forward to the continued high level of competition for the upcoming race.
“It always is fun to see how fast those top riders go and the long stream of competitors behind them,” Tuma said. “There is a distance for everyone and the course has a well-tailored grind-to-fun ratio for most every skill set.”
Tuma said Ore to Shore is working with local artist Hannah Milkie to design this year’s shirt design.
“The race committee looks forward to this process every year as we try to feature a diffrent artist and provide very few boundaries to allow the artist to make something unique,” Tuma said.
