UPHS reaches lease agreement for former Office Max property

MARQUETTE — Services currently offered at the former UP Health System-Marquette campus may be moving.

UP Health System-Marquette confirmed the hospital has entered into a lease agreement for the former Office Max property on West Washington Street in Marquette.

Hospital administration announced that it’s entered into the final phase of design development to determine the build-out for the remaining services at the former hospital campus on College Avenue.

The proposed move would impact outpatient behavioral health, bariatric services, the blood donor center, UPHS-Marquette business office, health information management and the school of emergency medical technicians.

“All along, our goal has been to identify the right long-term plan, and our team is committed to delivering high-quality, safe and compassionate care for our patients,” administrators said, “and we remain focused on the due diligence process and thoughtful approach to this significant project. We look forward to sharing more specifics about the building refresh and timeline with the community as we finalize these plans.”

Many buildings on the 23-acre former hospital site near Northern Michigan University have been vacant since the facility moved to its new location on Baraga Avenue in 2019.

A deal with the Northern Michigan University Foundation to redevelop the former hospital site was finalized in September. The property was sold to the NMU Foundation for $1. Marquette-based Veridea Group will be the master developer for the project.

According to a September NMU Foundation press release, steps toward redevelopment of the former hospital campus are expected to start early next year. They include interior building demolition and hazardous material removal, along with site demolition and preparation for redevelopment.

UP Health System-Marquette staff and services are currently on-site will remain in the Neldberg Building and Blood Bank Building as tenants for a term of up to 18 months, the release said.

The Office Max location closed in November 2019.
