MARQUETTE — Two individuals were arrested on drug charges following a traffic stop in the city of Marquette on Saturday.

At about 2 a.m. Saturday, officers from the Marquette Police Department initiated a traffic stop on the suspects’ vehicle on U.S. 41 near McClellan Avenue for a traffic violation, the Marquette Police Department said. During the stop and investigation, the officers learned that two of the occupants had unrelated outstanding arrest warrants.

The suspects were identified as Shireen Elizabeth-Brondi Glenn, 27, of Marquette, and Allen James Hutchens, 26, of Gwinn.

Upon further investigation, officers located paraphernalia suspected to be used for methamphetamine and over 57 grams of suspected methamphetamine.

Glenn’s bond was set at $5,000 cash and a probable cause hearing was set for 2 p.m. Sept. 28. At this time, Glenn is lodged at the Marquette County Jail.

Gladstone man arrested

MARQUETTE — The Upper Peninsula Human Trafficking Task Force and Alger County Sheriff’s Office have announced the arrest of a 38-year-old Gladstone man who was taken into custody after attempting to meet with who he thought was a 15-year-old for sex.

Clifford Lawrence Kaja had been chatting with undercover police agents who were posing as minors. Police said Kaja showed up at a hotel in Munising with a form of payment, alcohol and condoms. Police say that hundreds of chats happened during the operation between undercover officers and multiple people interested in sex with a minor.

Kaja

Kaja has been charged with three counts. The first count is accosting a child for immoral purposes, a felony which has a maximum sentence of four years in prison. Conviction on the count requires the individual to register as a sex offender under the Michigan Sex Offender Registration Act.

The second count is using a computer to commit a crime, a felony with a maximum of seven years in prison.

The third count involves selling or furnishing alcohol to a minor, a misdemeanor which carries a mandatory $1,000 fine and can result in 60 days of imprisonment.

A cash bond of $100,000 was set.

“Thanks for the support of these operations,” said Alger County Sheriff Todd Brock in a press release. “The top priority of our office is to protect our kids and the vulnerable who cannot protect themselves. These are great operations, led by great people.”

The operation included other law enforcement agencies, including the Baraga County Sheriff’s Office, Houghton County Sheriff’s Office and the Iron River Police Department.

The Upper Peninsula Human Trafficking Task Force asks anyone who has information about Kaja or has been harmed by him in the past to come forward and call the Alger County Sheriff’s Office at 906-387-4444.

A confidential tipline operated by the task force can be reached at 906-229-9243.
