Philville marks 20 years of commercial recording

MARQUETTE — Philville Records, established in Marquette in 2000, is celebrating its 20th anniversary of commercial release with “Anthology Vol. 1.” The first volume is already available online at Philville Records website and Phil’s 550.

The included recordings are available on vinyl and span over the 20-year period of commercial recording with a limited 100 printed copies.

The album includes recordings from local Marquette band Frostbitten Grass and rare bootleg recordings of the song that won Philville Records the State Country Music Showdown in 2002.

Included in the anthology are several recordings of the stories behind the songs, including how they were written and recorded. Each album also comes with a sticker and autographed liner notes.

“Like many endeavors in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan of that era,” said Philville Records founder Matt Sayles. “The seeds of an idea of creating a small independent record label were born out of a lack of available options, very limited resources, and an eye on promoting something which at the time very few local folks were all that interested in. This (making of “Anthology“) has been a labor of love that was a therapeutic way of getting through the last few years.”

Philville Records has plans for a second and third volume to be released in 2023 and 2024.
