AG Nessel responds to Cambensy

MARQUETTE — After a meeting on Friday, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel weighed in on the controversial letter sent by state Rep. Sara Cambensy regarding the purchase of the old Marquette General Hospital.

Cambensy, D-Marquette, sent a letter to Nessel regarding the possibility of “significant conflict of interest concerns, including the possible misuse of state and local public funds involving the acquisition of the old Marquette General Hospital by a Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees member with the assistance of the NMU Foundation.”

“I can say that we’re reviewing everything,” said Nessel. “My understanding is that we’re getting really good cooperation from all the parties that are involved. My staff is getting a lot of documents and we’re going to be reviewing everything. We understand that this is an ongoing process and that there are a lot of balls in the air in terms of moving forward. We want to do the best we can to provide answers as quickly as we can, that being said, there are a lot of documents. All we can do is try to be as responsible as we can and collect as much information as we can.”

Earlier this week NMU Foundation’s legal counsel responded to Cambensy’s letter and a week prior the Marquette City Commission responded by sending their own letter to Nessel.
