Munising school board names new superintendent

New principal and athletic director also announced

MUNISING — The Munising Board of Education at a recent board meeting approved hiring Mike Travis as the next Munising Public Schools’ superintendent.

It also approved moving Nicole Lasak to the Munising Middle/High School principal and athletic director position.

Both changes will become effective July 1.

Pete Kelto, the current Munising Public Schools superintendent, will retire at the end of June.

Travis earned a bachelor of science degree in business education from Ferris State University in 1996 and a master’s degree in career and technical education in 2000, also from Ferris State. He has 26 years of experience in education, including 22 years as a principal.

Travis started his educational career as a teacher at Cheboygan High School before moving into administrative positions as an assistant principal at Mount Pleasant High School, and as a principal at Lakeview High School and Elk Rapids High S

chool. He was hired as the Munising Middle/High School principal and athletic director in July.

Travis and his wife Jennifer have two children. Olivia is a junior at Ferris State University, while Mason is a senior at Elk Rapids High School.

Lasak earned a bachelor of science degree in biology in 2005, her teaching certification in secondary education in 2008 and her master’s degree in educational administration in 2017, all from Northern Michigan University.

Lasak was a competitive cheer coach and athletic department secretary for Munising Public Schools before being hired as a secondary education science teacher at the Munising Middle/High School in 2010. She was hired as the Mather Elementary School principal, as well as state and federal programs coordinator, in July.

Lasak and her husband Joe have two children. Jackson is a fourth-grade student, and Hadley is in kindergarten.
