3 taken to hospital after Mackinac Bridge crash

MACKINAW CITY — Three people were injured in an accident that took place at about 10:40 a.m. Friday on the Mackinac Bridge, the Mackinaw City Police Department reported.

The bridge was temporarily closed due to the crash but reopened Friday afternoon, the Mackinac Bridge Authority reported.

A vehicle that was driven by Scott Bartholomew of downstate Fenton contained a passenger and was northbound on the Mackinac Bridge when Bartholomew lost control of his vehicle and crossed the median, according to a police department news release.

Police said Bartholomew was struck by another vehicle that was southbound on the bridge. That vehicle was driven by Jeffrey McCague of downstate Brighton, according to the department.

Bartholomew’s vehicle was hit broadside and eventually stopped, leaning on top of the side rail of bridge.

Bartholomew and his passenger received non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. McCague also received non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Mackinac Straits Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The Mackinaw City Police Department was assisted at the scene by Emmet EMS, Straits Area EMS, the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office, St. Ignace Police Department, the Mackinaw City and St. Ignace fire departments, and the Mackinac Bridge Authority.
