Giving in the 906

Campaign encourages donating to regional nonprofits

MARQUETTE — The #Give906 campaign kicks off across the Upper Peninsula Tuesday as part of the worldwide Giving Tuesday initiative as a way to help nonprofits raise funds and spread awareness of issues facing their communities.

Organized by Grow & Lead Community and Youth Development, the #Give906 campaign includes more than 50 Upper Peninsula nonprofit organizations that are raising funds. These nonprofits help local communities with causes ranging from travel expenses for cancer patients to providing opportunities for local children to learn music.

Linda Remsburg, an associate at Grow & Lead Community and Youth Development, encourages everyone to participate.

“Some organizations are looking for help on specific projects,” Remsburg said. “Others are looking for funding to help them operate year round.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, communities everywhere have seen struggles and hardships and areas throughout the U.P. are no different, she said.

“There has been an uptick in people wanting to volunteer and lend a hand,” said Remsburg. “We’ve all seen it–people wanting to help and people who are in need of help.”

Giving Tuesday is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Held on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year, the “global generosity movement” is responsible for helping nonprofits and charitable organizations across the planet through financial donations, volunteerism and raising awareness of issues facing each community, organizers said.

“Giving Tuesday isn’t just about making a monetary donation, it’s about volunteering and giving back in any way that you are able to,” officials said in a news release.
