United Way campaign to kick off Aug. 30

MARQUETTE — The United Way of Marquette County has announced that its fundraising campaign will kick off Aug. 30 and has named this year’s campaign co-chairs, Melissa Holmquist and Amy Quinn.

The co-chairs have set a campaign goal at $400,000 but hope to raise much more this year, organizers said. Letters, pledges and campaign materials will be mailed and dropped off to individuals and businesses in Marquette County.

Holmquist is the chief executive officer of Upper Peninsula Health Plan, where she has been employed for over 19 years. A native of Crystal Falls, Holmquist moved to the Marquette area to attend Northern Michigan University, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree. She serves on numerous local, state, and national boards, including InvestUP and the Economic Club of Marquette County.

“I am honored to serve as a United Way co-chair for the 2021-22 season,” Holmquist said in a news release. “I believe in the mission of the organization and am excited to lend my voice to help them further their goals and continue to provide critical funding to a variety of worthy community-based organizations.”

Quinn is the CEO of Grow & Lead, a community-based organization “working to create bright futures for youth by strengthening the nonprofit sector,” organizers said.

Quinn previously served as the executive director of Four Corners Child Advocacy Center and commodity trading advisor with Cargill Inc. She has eight years of experience in for-profit and 15 years in for-purpose corporations. She holds a bachelor’s degree in agriculture business from Colorado State University and a master’s of business administration from Northern Michigan University.

“A vibrant nonprofit industry is essential for a thriving community,” Quinn said in the release. “United Way is a credible source to help your neighbors because they believe in the Tanzanian proverb that little by little, a little becomes a lot.”

This year’s fundraising campaign, which kicks off at the end of this month, will involve United Way’s media partners. The media consortium recently gathered for lunch and to discuss the upcoming campaign and pledging their support, organizers said.

United Way of Marquette County Executive Director Andrew Rickauer and/or the co-chairs can schedule a visit to any workplace or organization that would like a 15-minute presentation to learn about the United Way.
