Motorcyclist fatally injured in Sands Township crash

SANDS — A motorcyclist died in a two-vehicle accident late Wednesday in Sands Township, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office reported that at about 10:51 p.m. Wednesday, deputies were dispatched to County Road 480 near Pelissier Lake Road for an accident involving a motorcycle and pickup truck.

A deputy arrived at the scene within two minutes of the initial call, and with the assistance of the public, began life-saving measures on the motorcycle driver. However, the measures were unsuccessful and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorcycle was driven by a Skandia man while the other vehicle, a Dodge pickup truck, was driven by a Dickinson County man. The incident remains under investigation, and no further information is available at this time. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Additionally, while deputies were conducting a crash investigation, a second accident occurred when another vehicle failed to stop for the emergency vehicles blocking the scene. The second crash involved a passenger car hitting a Sands Township emergency fire pickup truck while emergency lights were activated to protect first responders at the scene.

The second crash was investigated by the Michigan State Police.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the second crash.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene of the initial crash by the Michigan State Police, Sands Township EMS/Fire and U.P. Health System-EMS.
