MARQUETTE -- The Marquette County Board approved a resolution to name a road after commissioner Gerald Corkin on Tuesday night.
Corkin has been a Marquette County commissioner since November 1985 and chairman of the board for over 30 years. He has served on the Negaunee City Council, the Transportation Advisory Board, the Solid Waste Planning Committee, the Statutory Finance Committee, the Lake Superior Community Partnership, the chair of Michigan Works Administrative Board, chairman of Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Regional Commission as well as chairman of the Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Executive Committee, Upper Peninsula Commission on Area Progress board of directors and board of commissioners, and chair of the UP911 Authority.
He has focused on the redevelopment of the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base and moving the county airport to Sawyer. The Marquette County Road Commission, Superior Extrusion Inc. and the county board partnered together to recieve a Michigan Department of Transportation grant to help facilitate the Sawyer expansion.
According to the resolution presented, "The Board of Marquette County Road Commissioners wants to honor and recognize Gerry Corkin's dedication to public service to the citizens of Marquette County, the (U.P.) and the state of Michigan." It also says, "The new road serving the airport, the Sawyer Operations Center, and the SEI facility shall be called Gerry Corkin Road."
Corkin said in response to the resolution, "One of the first things I told the people of Marquette County when I ran for this job was that we are going to live within our means and be fair to the people that work here, but we have to live within our means, so it is very humbling to be recognized by the road commission."
