Sailboat crew rescued on Superior

Officials: Vessel capsized, civilian in canoe assisted until responders arrived

MARQUETTE — Local agencies rescued a capsized sailboat and crew from Lake Superior in Marquette Township around 3 p.m. Thursday, the Marquette Township Fire Department reported.

The fire department said rescue personnel responded to a report of a sailboat that had capsized with one occupant of the sailboat in the water between Middle Island Point and Partridge Island and another with the boat.

A civilian in a canoe was assisting the crew of the sailboat upon the rescuers’ arrival. Rescue personnel contacted the sailboat crew with a surfboard, after which the Coast Guard arrived and provided back-up.

The sailboat and crew were helped to shore and the emergency was terminated, the fire department said.

“It was great to have such great teamwork between all responding agencies,” said Assistant Fire Chief Robert Cochran in a news release.

Assisting agencies were the Marquette City Fire Department, the Chocolay Township Fire Department, Marquette County Special Operations, Marquette County 131, UP Health System EMS and the U.S. Coast Guard.
