Man dies in Saturday Mackinac Bridge crash

ST. IGNACE — A motorcyclist was killed on Saturday morning in a crash on the Mackinac Bridge, the Michigan State Police St. Ignace Post reported.

Troopers from the post were called to the Mackinac Bridge at around 10:30 a.m. Saturday for a motorcycle crash that resulted in a fatality. Upon investigation, troopers learned a 78-year-old male from downstate Cheboygan was traveling northbound across the bridge when he crossed the center lane divider and struck an oncoming pickup truck. The motorcyclist passed away at the scene, officials said. His name had not been released by police as of Journal press time.

The pickup truck was driven by a 39-year-old male from Newberry. The driver of the truck and his occupants incurred minor injuries and were treated at the scene. The crash remains under investigation. However, alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in the crash, police said. Troopers were assisted by the Michigan State Police Gaylord Post, Mackinaw City Police, Mackinaw City Fire Department, Mackinac Bridge Authority and Emmet County EMS.
