ISHPEMING — Cognition Brewing Company will spend the coming weeks planning its next moves after permanently closing its doors at the Mather Inn in Ishpeming. This stems from a lengthy landlord-tenant dispute and a May 28 condemnation notice for the space occupied by the brewery at the Mather Inn, Cognition owner Jay Clancey said.

Clancey says the business will be focusing on moving out of the Mather Inn and opening its new location along South Third Street in Marquette for now, but he hopes to eventually open a new Ishpeming location.

“Building one brewery at a time is plenty,” Clancey said.

Cognition staff plans to contact the Michigan Liquor Control Commission to start the process of beer destruction and to start assessing its inventory of large equipment.

Clancey and his staff will go through the equipment inventory to determine if they should sell it, store it or move it to its new Marquette location.

Cognition officials were already working toward establishing a new brewery in the upcoming Third Street Marketplace in Marquette, potentially opening as early as November. Cognition’s Marquette-based brewing operation is expected to be roughly 1.5 times the size of its previous brewery at the Mather Inn.

The closure at the Mather Inn location was announced Wednesday on Cognition’s Facebook page.

“Rest assured, you have definitely not seen the last of Cognition Brewing in downtown Ishpeming,” the post reads. “Ishpeming is becoming vibrant again with many new homeowners and significant new business investment. We want to remain a part of this resurgence in the worst way — just not right now.”

Including repeat customers, the brewing company has welcomed over 100,000 patrons since it opened at the Mather Inn in 2015.

Starting at $3.23/week.
