Millages pass: Humboldt, Richmond, West Branch and Burt townships approve proposals

Humboldt, Richmond and West Branch townships approve proposals

MARQUETTE — Voters in Humboldt, Richmond and West Branch townships in Marquette County and Burt Township in Alger County passed all proposals on Tuesday’s ballot.

Humboldt Township

Humboldt Township residents approved by a vote of 34-7 an expiring previously voted increase in the tax limitation imposed in Humboldt Township under Article IX, Sec. 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 3 mills — reduced to 2.9838 mills by the required millage rollbacks — being renewed at and increased up to the originally voted 3 mills and levied for four years, 2022-2025 inclusive, for the purpose of general operating.

It will raise an estimated $91,761.88 in the first year millage is levied.

Richmond Township

Richmond Township residents approved by a vote of 82-18 an expired previously voted increase in the tax limitations imposed under Article IX, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution in Richmond Township, of 2.5 mill by the required rollbacks, be renewed at and increased up to the original voted 2.5 mill of taxable value for a period of five years, from 2022 through 2026, both inclusive, for general township operating purposes.

It will raise an estimated $57,000 in the first year the millage is levied.

West Branch Township

West Branch Township residents approved by a vote of 85-9 that a previous voted millage for emergency services be renewed authorizing an ad valorem tax levy within the township of an amount not to exceed 1.98140 mills for a period of four consecutive years, from 2021 to 2024 inclusive.

It will raise an estimated $63,084 in the first year.

All election results are unofficial. They are expected to be verified by the Marquette County Board of Canvassers today.

Burt Township

Fire Protection Millage Renewal

Burt Township residents approved 144-25 renewing the 1.5 mill under Article IX, Sec. 6 of the Michigan Constitution in Burt Township. It will be levied from 2021-25 for the purpose of construction, operation, maintenance and improvement of the Fire Department of Burt Township, raising about $81,020 in the first year the millage will be levied.

General Operating – Headlee

Burt Township residents approved by a vote of 116-52 increasing the millage rate by 0.4358 mills to be allocated for the reduction of 0.5642 mills. This is for the purpose of general operating, and will be levied by Burt Township from 2021-25 and will raise about $54,021 in the first year the millage is levied.

Road Maintenance and Improvements

Burt Township residents approved by a vote 144-26 to renew the 1.5 mill for road maintenance and improvement under Article IX, Sec. 6 of the Michigan Constitution in Burt Township. It will be levied from 2021-25 for road maintenance and improvements within Burt Township, raising about $81,020 in the first year the millage is levied.

All election results are unofficial. They are expected to be verified by the Alger County Board of Canvassers Thursday.
