ESCANABA -- Shoppers and employees at Walmart in Escanaba are safe after an evacuation for a false alarm on Tuesday night.

Officers searched the store while employees and civilians evacuated, and the building was locked down, according to a news release.
Police searched the business and found no concerning safety issues. After reviewing store surveillance footage, it was determined that store merchandise was mistakenly identified as a rifle as a subject was entering the store, police said.
Assisting EDPS at the scene were Delta County Central Dispatch, the Delta County Sheriff's Office, the Michigan State Police Gladstone Post, the Michigan State Police Hometown Security Team, the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team, the Hannahville Tribal Police Department and the Menominee County Sheriff's Office.
