MARQUETTE — On Thursday, Sawyer International Airport was one of five airports that each will be awarded roughly $1 million.

The U.S. Department of Transportation will award Ford Airport, Delta Airport, Sawyer International Airport, Houghton County Memorial Airport and Chippewa County International Airport over $1 million each.

The funding is intended for personnel, cleaning, sanitization, janitorial services and overall combatting the spread of pathogens in the airport.

“These investments will make air travel safer and more reliable,” said U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Lansing, in a press release. “It will help our communities rebound from the pandemic and encourage businesses to invest in the region and create jobs.”
