Sawyer to increase flights in May; virus safety protocols remain

MARQUETTE — Sawyer International Airport is increasing flights beginning in May, continuing enhanced protocols related to COVID-19.

SkyWest, doing business as Delta Air Lines, will increase its flight schedule to Detroit beginning May 5 with an additional return flight to Detroit, Sawyer announced. With the new schedule, SkyWest will continue its early morning departure along with a mid-morning departure to Detroit to allow passengers to continue their travel the same day.

SkyWest also will continue its daily flight to Minneapolis. American Airlines will add a second flight to Chicago beginning May 6.

Sawyer officials said in a news release that as airlines add flights across the U.S., it’s excited that Upper Peninsula travelers can resume summer travel plans.

Departures beginning in May are:

≤ 6:33 a.m. daily except Tuesdays, Sawyer to Chicago, American.

Sawyer and the airline companies have enhanced protocols and frequent cleaning and are providing temporary changes, including requiring passengers to wear face coverings, to increase passenger safety.

Additionally, the Transportation Security Administration is allowing one liquid hand sanitizer container up to 12 ounces per passenger in carry-on bags until further notice. Passengers can expect that these containers larger than the standard allowance of 3.4 ounces of liquids permitted through a checkpoint will need to be screened separately.

Sawyer asks that passengers keep in mind that all other liquids, gels and aerosols brought to a checkpoint continue to be allowed at the limit of 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters carried in a one-quart-size bag.
