MDOT, Marquette Township officials to hold virtual meeting

MARQUETTE — The Michigan Department of Transportation and Marquette Township officials will hold a virtual public meeting at 6 p.m. April 20 to discuss the upcoming U.S. 41/M-28 rebuilding project.

The presentation will provide information on a $9.2 million project to resurface nearly three miles of highway and build a non-motorized pathway in Marquette Township, with work scheduled from May to November. There will be lane closures, night work and local detours through this period, according to MDOT.

As this area is the busiest route in the Upper Peninsula — with traffic counts of up to 33,000 vehicles daily — efforts will be taken to minimize the impact of traffic flow during heaviest traffic periods, officials said.

“This meeting will be a good opportunity to find out about the traffic impact this summer, which will be significant,” MDOT communications representative Dan Weingarten said in a phone interview. “There will be sections where lanes are closed. In general, it would be good (for residents) to be in on this meeting to find out about how their morning commute will look this summer. Traffic and safety engineers will go over the different configurations of the project for this summer.”

The work will result in resurfaced roadway and rebuilt shoulders on U.S. 41 from its intersection with Wright Street to Washington Street.

A separate non-motorized path is planned along with this project from Wright Street to Commerce Drive. The project will benefit multiple users, including bicyclists, officials said.

This path will provide “safe access for bicycles and pedestrians, creating an important connection between current and future non-motorized improvements planned by Marquette Township,” officials said in the release.

The presentation will begin at 6 p.m., prior to the regular Marquette Township Board meeting. A question-and-answer period will follow the presentation.

MDOT’s Ishpeming Transportation Service Center and Superior Region staff as well as Marquette Township officials will be in attendance.
