Man arrested on charges including assault with intent to murder

Suspect facing several felonies after alleged home invasion

MARQUETTE — A Marquette man has been arrested on various felony charges stemming from a Feb. 28 incident at a Marquette residence.

Officers with the Marquette Police Department were dispatched to a felonious assault complaint and home invasion along the 400 block of West Hewitt Street around 4 a.m. Feb. 28.

Upon arrival, police identified a man who was stabbed, and another who had injuries from being struck by a blunt object, officials said. Medical aid was rendered to both men, after which they were transported to UP Health System-Marquette.

Both men were treated for their injuries and later discharged from the hospital. Police said the men were acquainted with one another before the incident took place.

The investigation, which is ongoing, showed that a 32-year-old Marquette resident, Alexander Chapoton, assaulted the male victim with two frying pans. The victim sustained injuries and countered the assault by stabbing Chapoto, police said.

Chapoton was arrested on a number of charges, which were reviewed by the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office and authorized by the 96th District Court of Marquette, according to officials.

The arrest warrant included the following charges:

≤ one count of assault with intent to murder, a felony punishable by up to life in prison;

≤ one count of home invasion-first degree, a 20-year felony;

≤ two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder or by strangulation, a 10-year felony; and

≤ one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony.

Chapoton was lodged at the Marquette County Jail with his bond set at $500,000 cash or surety. Chapoton has not yet been arraigned, police said.

Marquette police were assisted by UPHS-Marquette EMS, the Marquette City Fire Department and Northern Michigan University Public Safety.
