Corrections officer hospitalized after assault at Marquette Branch Prison
MARQUETTE — A Michigan Department of Corrections officer at Marquette Branch Prison was hospitalized Saturday after an assault carried out by a maximum security prisoner.
At around 4 p.m. Saturday, the female corrections officer was releasing prisoners from their cells to the prison yard when the attack occurred, according to MDOC spokesperson Chris Gautz.
“The prisoner stabbed and punched the officer in the face and head as she defended herself,” a news release said. “Fellow officers responded and quickly got the prisoner away from the officer who had been knocked to the ground during the assault.”
The officer was transported by ambulance to a hospital where she was discharged later in the day.
“We are thankful to hear the officer is doing well and also thankful for the actions of the officers who assisted,” the release stated.
