4 evacuated after Sunday apartment fire in Negaunee

NEGAUNEE -- Four people were evacuated from a house after an early morning structure fire in Negaunee on Sunday.
At approximately 3:30 a.m., firefighters from the Negaunee City Fire Department responded to reports of unknown smoke in a home at 919 Oak St.
The home was divided into three apartment spaces, and there were four people inside of the structure at the time of the fire.
Crews knocked down the blaze in 45 minutes, and remained on scene to monitor for any hot spots.
The four individuals safely made it outside of the home before firefighters arrived on scene, with no injuries reported. A cat was also found alive after the fire was extinguished.
The upstairs apartment space was "totally destroyed," according to a news release, with heavy smoke, fire and water damage. The front apartment space suffered minor damage. The blaze also reached the attic and the structure's outside eaves.
Crews cleared the scene 4 hours after the initial call at approximately 7:30 a.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Assisting the Negaunee City Fire Department at the scene were the Negaunee Township Fire Department, Ishpeming City Fire Department, Marquette County Rescue 131, Negaunee Police, UP Health Systems – Marquette Ambulance and the Salvation Army Mobile Kitchen. The Marquette Township Fire Department was also on standby.
