Chassell man pronounced dead at the scene of crash

HOUGHTON — A Chassell man was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident Sunday night in Portage Township, according to the Michigan State Police.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post were dispatched around 9:40 p.m. on Sunday to a single-vehicle rollover personal injury crash on Superior Road near Haapapuro Road in Portage Township, police said.

Investigation indicated that a vehicle driven by 50-year-old Rodney Barnes of Chassell was traveling south on Superior Road when he “lost control of the vehicle on the icy roadway,” police said in the release.

The vehicle slid sideways into the ditch area where it overturned and struck a tree. Barnes was not wearing a safety belt and was ejected from the vehicle, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, Houghton City Police Department, Hurontown Fire and Rescue, Mercy Ambulance and Superior Service Towing.
