Ishpeming teen struck by vehicle in Ely Township

ISHPEMING — A teen from Ishpeming was hit by a vehicle early Saturday morning in Ely Township, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The sheriff’s office was dispatched to U.S. 41 near Marquette County Road CJ just west of Jerzee’s 41 Club where a pedestrian who was walking along the road edge was struck from behind by a mid- to large-sized service vehicle.

The incident took place around 6:25 a.m., the sheriff’s office said. The 39-year-old driver of the vehicle, formerly from Marquette County but now living in Wisconsin, was headed to work when the collision occurred. The driver said he was heading east when he came upon a subject who was walking east along the road edge/fog line.

The driver was unable to avoid the collision. The walker was wearing dark clothing at the time, making him harder to see.

The male victim, 19, of Ishpeming, was injured and brought to UP Health System-Marquette by UPHS-EMS-Ishpeming. At the time of his admittance to the emergency department, he was in serious condition. Evidence at the scene appears to show the victim was walking in the same direction as traffic.

The investigation is still ongoing, and no citations have been issued at this time.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Ishpeming Township Fire Department and UPHS-EMS-Ishpeming.
