Injured hiker rescued from Sugar Loaf Mountain

MARQUETTE — The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Marquette Township Fire and Rescue Department and Chocolay Township Fire and Rescue responded to just below the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain Thursday for the report of an injured hiker.

A family reported to Marquette County Central Dispatch that they were hiking the mountain and while descending, a 14-year-old boy from Lower Michigan received a knee injury.

The family attempted to help him down the mountain, which is located along County Road 550 in Marquette Township, the youth was in too much pain to continue, the sheriff’s office said.

911 was called for assistance. A Stokes basket with a large soft tire was used to navigate the rugged terrain to bring the injured hiker down the mountain. The youth was transported to UPHS-Marquette for treatment.

Sheriff’s office personnel remind outdoor enthusiasts to wear proper footwear and bring water with them while enjoying the outdoors.
