Fatal three-vehicle crash claims man’s life

MARQUETTE — A 57-year-old man from Marquette died after a three-vehicle crash late Thursday afternoon on Marquette County Road 550.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash, which took place at 4 p.m. on CR 550 near Compeau Creek Road in Marquette Township. The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office said 57-year-old Jeffrey Scott Vashaw of Marquette was heading northbound in a 2007 Buick Lacrosse on County Road 550 when he crossed the center line and struck a southbound 2015 GMC Sierra.

The Lacrosse then continued northbound in the southbound lane and struck a southbound 2008 Ford F550, which was behind the GMC that was struck. All three vehicles sustained heavy damage, police said.

The GMC was driven by Richard John Goodney, 67, of Marquette. The Ford was driven by Joseph James Mueller, 34, of Gwinn.

Vashaw was taken to UP Health System-Marquette for life-threatening injuries and pronounced dead at the hospital.

Goodney and a passenger in his vehicle, Laura McNabb Goodney, denied medical treatment on the scene. Mueller sought medical treatment on his own.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Marquette Township Fire Department and EMS, UPHS EMS and the Michigan State Police.
