3 lodged after accident

MARQUETTE — Two subjects were lodged in the Marquette County Jail following a single-vehicle accident on Thursday.

The Marquette Police Department reported that at approximately 9:50 p.m. Thursday, officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for speeding. The suspect, Zya Ray Fassbender, 19, of Marquette, accelerated away from the patrol unit, it said.

After a short pursuit the suspect attempted to make a corner at high speeds, lost control of the vehicle and struck a fire hydrant on Elm Street near McClellan Avenue.

Two passengers in the vehicle at the time were identified as Taylor Kugler, 23, and Amber Sweeney, 27, both of Gwinn. The three subjects were transported to the Upper Peninsula Health System Emergency Department by EMS.

Kugler and Sweeney were treated and released by the hospital. Both females had outstanding unrelated arrest warrants out of Marquette County and were lodged in the Marquette County Jail.

After evaluation at the emergency room, Fassbender was lodged in the Marquette County Jail for fleeing and eluding.

Additional charges later were authorized by the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office. The three additional felony charges were possession of methamphetamine, resisting and obstructing, and tampering with evidence. No arraignment date has been set.
