A helicopter Monday hovers near the top of an antenna that is being replaced. The work completes a year-long upgrade for the WNMU-TV station that was required by the Federal Communications Commission as part of a national effort by the agency to free up more spectrum for mobile phones and wireless carriers. The transmitter tower in Ely Township is 1,100 feet high. In addition to ensuring the reliability of the broadcast signal, this change will allow the station to offer additional channels in the years ahead as digital TV broadcasting advances with the new ATSC 3.0 standard.
