Cancellations, closures, postponements: Local list continues to grow
MARQUETTE — Many area organizations and businesses have announced closures or cancellations due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
≤ All Bay Cliff Health Camp events are canceled until April 5. Visitors and non-essential personnel are asked to avoid the campus and to phone the office with any questions or concerns. Future event planning is being adjusted in two- to four-week intervals as necessary.
≤ The Chocolay Senior Center will be closed for the next three weeks, with no tai chi, potlucks, health checks, birthday celebrations, bingo or road trips during this period. It is hoped the center will reopen April 7 pending further information about the crisis.
≤ The Negaunee Senior Center will be closed for social activities through April 6. This includes all cards, meals, fitness classes and other social gatherings. The center will continue to provide in-home services and social work services with heightened precautions and protocols. In addition, individual services such as legal clinics, foot-care appointments and tax preparation appointments will continue as usual.
≤ The Forsyth Township Community Center announced on Facebook that it has suspended all non-essential activities beginning today. It is anticipated Meals and Wheels, chore worker support to seniors, and AARP tax appointments will continue.
≤ The maple sugaring demonstration scheduled for Saturday at MooseWood Nature Center has been canceled. Organizers hope to reschedule the program for April.
≤ “Vegas comes to Ishpeming,” a charitable gaming fundraiser hosted at the Greater Ishpeming-Negaunee Area Chamber of Commerce, has been postponed and will be rescheduled.
≤ “Learn & Spring Into Action,” an environmental-stewardship event originally scheduled for Tuesday at Northern Michigan University, has been postponed until October.
≤ The Michigan Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee Township will be closed through April 14.
≤ The Thursday meeting of the UP North Knitting Guild is canceled. The guild plans to meet on April 23. For more information, contact Pat at 906-249-3128.
≤ The Transition Marquette County Repair Cafe scheduled for Saturday at the Peter White Public Library has been canceled.
≤ The meeting of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1900 originally set for March 25 has been canceled.
Area churches also have announced changes.
≤ The leadership of Eden Lutheran Church in Munising has decided to suspend all worship services through April. All Sunday School programming is suspended as well. Leadership plans to re-evaluate this decision the week of March 30 to determine how it moves forward. People who know of anyone in need of pastoral care or assistance in getting medications, food or other items are asked contact the office at 906-387-2520.
≤ Episcopal churches in the Upper Peninsula will be closed for worship and all gatherings and meetings unti the end of March.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ordered that all restaurants and bars be closed to dine-in customers, effective at 3 p.m. today, to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Businesses may stay open for takeout and delivery.
≤ 231 West Patisserie in Marquette was to continue its wholesale businesses as well as menu development for the spring/summer menu upon reopening. Staff will be paid 100% of its wages during the duration of the closure.
≤ Staff of The Delft Bistro and Donckers, both located in Marquette, planned to meet to decide how to distribute some of their perishable food, and is working with JJ Packs to get some of this food to kids and families in need, according to its Facebook page.
≤ Towners Bakery & Chocolate Shoppe in Gwinn will be a drive-through business only for the next two weeks. A smaller menu will be released on Tuesday.
≤ Java Bay is closed.
≤ Casa Calabria is closed indefinitely.
≤ The Velodrome Coffee Company in Marquette will offer only to-go options and not accept cash as payment.
Alger County Communities That Care announced on Facebook that it will provide Alger Packs at the Silver Dollar in Trenary and the Village Pub at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Each pack will contain two weeks of breakfast and lunch foods. The packs will be available at these locations throughout the week.
Negaunee Public Schools will allow parents to pick up prescription medications from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today if a child receives that medication at school and is needed over the next two weeks. Students will not be permitted to take this medication home.
