MARQUETTE — Coffee lovers can show their support for the Marquette Women’s Center on Friday by getting their daily caffeine fix at Marquette’s Contrast Coffee.
All day Friday, 10% of the proceeds from every blackberry cobbler latte sold at the Third Street coffee shop will be donated to the Marquette Women’s Center, a nonprofit organization that provides an emergency shelter, as well as counseling and support services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their families.
Representatives from the Women’s Center will be at the coffee shop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to answer questions, provide information on the services offered by the center and let community members know how they can get involved.
Donations to the center will also be collected throughout the day at the coffee shop, which is located at 600 N. Third St.
The event is part of Contrast’s 906 Days series, which collects funds from coffee sales to be donated back to local organizations, explained Mandy Anglen, general manager at Contrast Coffee.
“We’ve always wanted to be more involved in the community, especially once we got established here in Marquette, so we started what we call 906 Days,” Anglen said. “We’ve already partnered with the 906 Adventure (Team) bike club, we’ve partnered with the Superior Health Foundation for breast cancer awareness. We’re trying to make it mostly a quarterly thing, but if we can make it monthly we’d love to do that. The Women’s Center just happened to be the next organization that we choose to give back to.”
Many children and families throughout the Upper Peninsula are in need of assistance, especially during the holidays, she said.
“As we all know, domestic violence and things like that happen year round, but I feel like during the holidays it can be a little more tricky for people just because the holidays can be hard for a lot of people,” Anglen said. “It was good timing to work with the Women’s Center with it being winter in the U.P. We just really are passionate about our community in general. But I think women and kids probably, I would say, have the biggest need during the winter along with the elderly. I think the next direction we want to go is partnering with some of the elderly community, but for right now we chose the Women’s Center.”
The event may serve as a reminder to those who attend that hard times can fall on anyone, Anglen said. It can also help attendees learn more about a community resource, she added.
“I think anyone can be down on their luck at any time. I feel like you could be sitting on top of the world financially, or even as a parent or a single mom, and it doesn’t take long before something could happen to put you at the bottom where you need assistance, whether that’s dry goods or household items or even a little bit of financial help when it comes to bills,” Anglen said. “I think it’s a great way for the community to come out and support each other.”
The blackberry cobbler latte from Contrast Coffee’s winter seasonal menu is $5.25 for a small and $5.75 for a large and made of blackberry puree mixed with espresso and steamed oat milk, then topped off with a dash of allspice.
“It’s really delicious. It’s actually my favorite drink on the holiday menu. It’s kind of like eating a piece of blackberry cobbler, literally,” Anglen said.
The Women’s Center is seeking donations of coffee, juice boxes, diapers, canned soups, Marquette city trash bags, toilet paper, laundry soap, cleaning supplies, body wash, shampoo and more.
Contrast Coffee will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday.
