Negaunee election results pending

Write-in winner likely to be announced later today

NEGAUNEE — It remains to be seen who will fill the two open seats on the Negaunee City Council after Tuesday’s election.

However, it is almost certain that Kevin Flohe, who ran unopposed and was the only name to appear on Tuesday’s ballot, will fill one of the seats after garnering 124 votes.

The winner of the second seat will likely be announced following a meeting of the Marquette County Board of Canvassers later today, said Marquette County Clerk Linda Talsma.

There were 69 “unresolved write-in” votes cast for the second seat, according to the clerk’s election summary report.

Dana LaLonde was the only write-in candidate confirmed to have officially registered with her office, Talsma said.

State statute MCL 116 of 1954 requires a candidate to file a declaration of intent on the Friday prior to election.

The statue states, in part, that “the board of election inspectors shall not count a write-in vote for a person unless that person has filed a declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate as provided in this section.”

All election results are considered unofficial until certified by the board of canvassers, which is expected to meet at 1 p.m. today.
