Church’s fall bazaar a testament to service

HARVEY — The Prince of Peace Fall Bazaar, scheduled for 10 a.m. today, has special meaning this year. Organizers of the fundraiser at 555 Riverside Road in Harvey say the 46th annual event is a testament to faith, family and service.

Donna Clarke, founder of the event and longtime organizer, passed away on Sept. 28 at age 85. But she leaves behind a legacy of service for those who knew her, daughter Kris Miller said.

Beginning in 1973, five generations of Clarke’s family, including her mother and her daughters, her granddaughter and great-granddaughter, have helped make the event a success.

“I started helping with the bazaar when I was 16 years old,” Miller said, “and over the years if something needed doing, everyone said, ‘The Clarke girls can do it.’ And I haven’t been a Clarke girl in years.”

As a Prince of Peace leader and charter member, Clarke took her role seriously, acting as president of the church’s women’s group and a Sunday school teacher over the years, among many other things, Miller said.

“She’s always been for the community, the church and especially for the kids,” Miller said.

The proceeds of the event, which includes a white elephant table, crafts, pies, baked goods and a traditional tea table, will be donated to the Salvation Army, she said.

The practice started nearly two decades ago at Clarke’s request.

“It stays in the community,” Miller said. “It was all about serving the community for my mom.”

The bazaar has become a staple in the Chocolay Township over the years and is a chance for the kids and parents to spend time in a friendly, inviting atmosphere.

“It’s a great gathering and the same dedicated people have run it forever,” Miller said. “People always tell me that they just can’t wait for this one because everyone makes you feel like you are at home.”
