Chocolay hires new manager

William DeGroot

HARVEY — Chocolay Township may have a new manager, but there are a few things left to iron out.

The Chocolay Township Board on Monday voted unanimously to hire Ann Arbor Transit Authority financial analyst and transit planner William DeGroot for the position.

Jon Kangas, current Chocolay Township manager, confirmed that the board had voted to hire De-Groot, but could not confirm if DeGroot had been officially offered the position.

Township Supervisor Richard Bohjanen is expected to contact DeGroot sometime today, Kangas said.

It is unlikely that DeGroot, if he accepts the township’s offer, would be in place prior to Sept. 15, which is Kangas’ last day, he said.

“The board contacted him back prior to offering him the position, asked him when he could start,” Kangas said in a phone interview today. “He being from out of the area, moving, finding a home, that’s a lot.”

The board accepted Kangas’ resignation during a June 26 board meeting. Kangas has accepted a position as the superintendent of public works for Marquette Township.

Three other candidates — Lois Bressette of Clintonville, Wisconsin; David Boyle of Marquette Township; and Chocolay Township Clerk Max Engle — also interviewed for the Chocolay Township position.
