Ishpeming woman charged with filing false police report

ISHPEMING — An Ishpeming woman has been charged with filing a false police report after claiming over $600 from her business had been stolen from her vehicle, according to the Ishpeming City Police Department.

Robin Denise Vande Zande, 49, of Ishpeming, had reported the theft of about $622 from her vehicle around 9:51 p.m. April 14.

Vande Zande advised officers at the time that she believed someone had entered her vehicle around 6:30 p.m. when she was paying for gas inside Elaine’s Party Store along Vine Street in Ishpeming.

Vande Zande stated the money, which was a deposit from her business, Uptown Gifts, was “in a brown paper bag ‘stuffed’ in her purse located on the floor of the vehicle,” according to police. She stated nothing else had been taken and the purse had been moved.

However, officers reviewed surveillance video from Elaine’s Party Store and observed that no one had entered Vande Zande’s vehicle. Following this, Vande Zande advised police that she did stop by her business located in the Gossard Building and also went to the casino that night, officials said.

Police reviewed video surveillance from behind the Gossard Building and the casino and found “again, no one had entered Vande Zande’s vehicle,” the press release states. Police also determined that Vandezande was at the casino for a few hours earlier that day, and for a “length of time” the day prior.

Based on the investigation, police said the “evidence does not support the allegations reported by Vande Zande that the money had been stolen.”

Vande Zande was arrested on the misdeameanor charge and processed before being released on a personal recognizance bond.
