Cars created for this year's derby are pictured. The Pinewood Derby is a signature Cub Scout event where boys and girls from grades kindergarten through 5th craft their own derby cars from a block of wood to be raced. Cars are raced eight times in each of the four lanes. The top two racers from each age group or den competes in the Pinewood derby Championships. Michele Curtis, assistant scoutmaster with the Chatham Boy Scout group said nothing compares to seeing the joy on the children's faces as they watch their cars, or their brothers or friends cars come down the track and they’re learning from the experience too. “They are learning how to work as a team and cheer each other on when they are doing this and it’s a family thing because mom and dad or grandpa or whoever has to help them build that…” Curtis said.
