MARQUETTE–Under colorful lights and surrounded by elegant decor, the fifth annual Marquette County Mom Prom took place at the Masonic Center Friday evening. The event, which invites women over 21 to dress in their black-tie attire, is a fundraiser that chooses a different family, individual or nonprofit organization each year to receive the proceeds.

“This year’s theme is Heaven on Earth for Ainsley Kargela, a very sweet, beautiful young lady that we learned a lot of lessons (from),” Melissa Broeders, Mom Prom committee member, said.

Proceeds raised from the evening will benefit the non-profit Ainsley’s HALO. Ainsley’s HALO works to provide hockey and dance scholarships to area residences; provides donations of hats, Band-Aids, toys and poke prizes for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan; and gives continual support for pediatric cancer research. The nonprofit was formed in memory of 8-year-old Kargela, who lost her battle with a rare form of cancer last year. Many attendees who knew her or her family wore purple accessories, Kargela’s favorite color.

“We are overwhelmed with the community support that we continue to receive from the community and that we’ve always received through Ainsley’s life,” said Patti Kargela, Ainsley’s mom and CEO of the Ainsley’s HALO. “This helps in keeping her memory and her legacy alive.”

The event featured dancing, cocktails, delicious food, a silent auction and a chance to win prizes provided by local businesses.
