Details released on fatal crash

MARQUETTE — The Michigan State Police have released the names of the people involved in Friday morning’s fatal traffic accident in Marquette Township.

The pedestrian killed in the crash was Jeremy Wills, 36, of Skandia and Thomas Kuopus, 51, of Ishpeming was the man driving the truck involved in the accident, police said.

Authorities did not speculate on why Wills was crossing the highway at that time or indicate whether any charges against Kuopus would be pursued.

The incident occurred around 5:50 a.m. Friday on U.S. 41 near Brickyard Road when the Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Kuopus struck Wills. Police said Wills was “severely injured and succumbed to the injuries at the scene.” U.S. 41 was closed in both directions, with traffic being rerouted until about 9 a.m.

The Marquette City Police Department, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, the Marquette Township Fire Department and UP Health System-Marquette assisted the Michigan State Police at the scene.
