ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming mother who was arrested on alleged child abuse charges after leaving her 2-year-old child unsupervised for about an hour in a vehicle with an open door was arraigned in court Thursday.

Taylor Ann Thompson, 27, of Ishpeming, was charged with third-degree child abuse, according to a press release from the Ishpeming Police Department. The Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office authorized the charges for the felony crime, the release states.

She was arraigned in 96th District Court and is set for a probable cause conference Feb. 6 and a preliminary examination Feb. 13, court documents state.

Thompson was lodged at the Marquette County Jail on a $25,000 cash bond.

Police said the vehicle was reported to be behind the Salvation Army on East Division Street in Ishpeming around 10 a.m. Wednesday and that Salvation Army employees had observed the vehicle in the parking lot with a door open.

An employee approached the vehicle and closed the door, as she did not see anyone around, according to the IPD press release. The vehicle was not running at the time, and as the door closed, locking the vehicle, the employee heard a child start crying and observed the girl in the back seat.

The average temperature recorded Wednesday at the National Weather Service office in Negaunee Township was 16 degrees, with a high of 18 and an overnight low of 13 degrees.

When officers arrived, they broke a window on the vehicle to gain access to the child and called UP Health System Emergency Medical Services to the scene.

When the child was removed from the vehicle, police said she was “alert but cold.” Officers placed her in a patrol vehicle to warm her until the ambulance arrived to transport her to UPHS-Bell.

Around a half hour after the initial call was made, the mother of the child showed up at the scene and said she had been at a friend’s house, police reported. However, the woman would not provide specific information on her whereabouts. The mother was arrested and transported to the Marquette County Jail.

The child, who police estimated had been left alone in the car for about an hour, was treated for exposure and has been turned over to Child Protective Services.
