MARQUETTE — Out of the 19 entries for the Marquette Downtown Development Authority’s 2018 Blueberry Festival poster contest, local artist Taryn Okesson reaped the fruit with her submission “Larry’s Chippy.”

“I remember the first blueberry fest and I have watched the contest year after year,” Okesson said in a press release issued by the DDA. “It was a goal to enter some day and I finally did.”

She was announced the winner of the contest June 7.

Each year, the winner is elected from a combined score based on an online voting system, a panel of judges and in-person votes.

Okesson’s image will be produced on festival posters and merchandise, along with 10 high-quality poster prints. She will also receive $150 in gift certificates from downtown businesses.

“Her poster is a cute image that appeals to a lot of people,” said Tara Laase-Mckinney, the DDA’s events and promotions coordinator. “The chipmunk adds diversity to images we had in the past, and we always look for a slightly different take on the blueberries.”

“Larry’s Chippy” will be on display at the festival, scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 27 in downtown Marquette.
