Multiple millages pass in Marquette County

MARQUETTE — Marquette County voters passed more than a few millages in Tuesday’s election.

Marquette Township

Marquette Township residents voted 1,831-612 in favor of its library millage renewal, one mill reduced to 0.8916 mill by the required millage rollbacks, renewed in an amount not to exceed .8916 mill and levied for two years, 2020-2021 inclusive. The estimated revenue the township will collect in the first year is approximately $246,142.

Township residents passed a recreational funding millage, 1,634-792, authorizing it be increased by a new millage in an amount not to exceed 0.5 mill for two years, 2020-21, both inclusive, to continue to provide public recreational activities, opportunities and staffing levels for facilities for township residents.

The estimated revenue the township will collect in the first year is $138,036.

Chocolay Township

Township residents voted 2,783-752 for Chocolay Township’s previously voted increases in charter millage in the collective total amount of one mill, reduced to 0.9907 mill by the required millage rollbacks, be renewed in an amount not to exceed .9907 mill and levied for three years, 2021-2023 inclusive. The funds are to be distributed to the Peter White Public Library to provide library services to township residents.

The estimated revenue the township will collect in the first year is approximately $227,225.27.

A mill is $1 on each $1,000 of taxable value.

Richmond Township

Richmond Township residents voted 335-93 to impose an increase of up to 2 mills in the township tax levy limitation for 15 years, 2020-34 inclusive, to provide funding for the operation and maintenance of the Richmond Township Library, raising an estimated $35,000 in the first year the millage is levied.

West Branch Township

West Branch Township residents voted 570-182 to renew the previously voted millage for library services, authorizing an ad valorem tax levy within the township in an amount not to exceed 0.9098 mills for two years, from 2021-22 inclusive. It will raise an estimated $29,040 in the first year.

City of Negaunee

By a vote of 2,051-409, residents passed a city of Negaunee street improvement and rehabilitation request allowing the Negaunee City Council be authorized to renew a previously approved and levied millage for the improvement and rehabilitation of city streets for up to two mills.

The millage is for eight years, beginning on Dec. 1, 2022, and running through the 2029 tax levy year, and will raise approximately $199,541 the first year.

This proposal will solely allow the city of Negaunee to continue to improve and rehabilitate city streets. This money has to be earmarked and can be used only for this purpose.

City residents voted 2,030-398 for a capital equipment millage renewal request for the city of Negaunee, which will allow the city to purchase and extend the life of equipment for fire, police and public works departments.

This money has to be earmarked and can only be used for one purpose.

The authorization is to renew a previously approved and levied millage for capital equipment for up to 1.5 mills for eight years, beginning on Dec. 1, 2022 and running through the 2029 tax levy year, inclusive. The millage will raise approximately $153,341.17 the first year.

Republic Township

Republic Township residents approved by a vote of 390-246 a dam improvement maintenance and repair millage, which is an increase of up to 1 mill, and levied upon all township property for three years, 2020-22, all years inclusive.

The millage is for improvement, maintenance and repairs to the Michigamme River Republic Dam. Revenue from this millage will be disbursed to include the Michigamme River Basin Water Resources Improvement Tax Increment Finance Authority. The estimated revenue the township will collect in the first year is $80,973.

Champion Township

Champion Township voters passed a general fund operating millage renewal, 116-38. The tax rate will be renewed at 5 mills for 2021-25 inclusive. The millage is estimated to generate $102,144 in the first year.

Champion Township voters voted 131-25 in favor of a road fund repair and maintenance millage renewal for 2 mills, which will be levied from 2021-25 inclusive. The millage is estimated to bring in $40,857 the first year.

Voters in Champion Township also voted 132-20 for renewal of financing costs of emergency medical services for 2021-25, inclusive. It is estimated the renewal will raise approximately $20,428 the first year.
